RWH in Boston, MA

RWHWe managed to visit some of the best stores in Boston. See where each store is on the map right here, and read in depth reviews of each one in the stories below!

Moxie in Beacon Hill

Moxie51 Charles St Boston, MA 02108 | (617) 557-9991

Moxie is a charming and sophisticated footwear and accessory boutique located in Boston's Beacon Hill. Karen Fadden Fabbri, the boutique's owner, opened the store in October 2001 and hasn't slowed down since. Before we began talking shoes, we wondered how she came up with the name. Her response, "I started with a thesaurus actually and found moxie. I also recalled the soda, Moxie. Its tagline was, ‘She's got Moxie.'" And so it stuck, and nearly 7 years later her store is a true expression of the word. MORE »

Footstock on Newbury Street

Footstock on Newbury Street133 Newbury Street | (617) 536-7124

If you're a comfort junkie, you'll want to add Footstock to your Boston agenda. The store specializes in European comfort brands and also in expertly finding the right shoes for your feet. Interestingly enough, the associates you'll meet there spend 3 weeks training to recognize foot problems and match up the right shoes for whatever their customer's needs are. In fact, the associates are instructed not to sell shoes to someone if the fit isn't exactly right! I don't know how often this actually happens, but it's certainly a claim to fame for the store.

Footstock has been at this location for 4 years, and has sister stores in Concord and Wellsley Mass. Usually carrying around 30 brands, the woman we spoke with said the store fits a range of customers from teens to the elderly and everyone in between, but judging by the styles and prices the average age is probably anywhere from the middle to upper end of that spectrum. Cuoio on Newbury Street

Cuoio on Newbury Street

115 Newbury St., Boston MA 02116 | (617) 859-0636

Newbury Street, for those of you who haven't been, is not a place in Boston to miss. Some have likened it to Fifth Ave in New York City, but it's much quainter, less luxurious, and has that old New England feel to it that is Boston's trademark. Oh, and it has a fraction of the crowds.

Nestled among a block full of stores is the second Cuoio, located below ground behind full-length glass windows filled with fun, quirky decorations like brightly colored lampshades hanging above boots and shoes. The inside was small, and the four of us entering tripled the amount of customers inside, but mirrored walls behind the shoes and accessories made it feel bigger than it was and really quite cozy. Cuoio at Faneuil Hall

Cuoio at Faneuill Hall170 Faneuil Hall Mktpl., Boston MA, 02109 | (617) 742-4486

Cuoio, which means leather in Italian, is also the name of three Massachusetts based shoe stores. The RWH team visited the two Boston locations, the first in the tourist hot-spot Faneuill Hall Marketplace and the other on swank Newbury Street. We expected two stores with the same name and ownership to be one and the same for the most part, but we couldn't have been more mistaken. Catering to their respective settings meant two totally different looks, shoes, and experiences.

Cuoio @ Faneuil Hall: It was a bitter cold winter Wednesday, so Faneuil Hall and its stores were uncharacteristically quiet. It was pretty easy to spot Cuoio with its purple awning and large glass windows which gave us a peek at what was inside. Numerous women's shoes awaited us, set on ledges, stands, and walls as well as silver poles studded with circular glass shelves MORE »

The Tannery

The Tannery39 Brattle St., Cambridge, MA 02138 | (617) 491-0810

Morgan and I recently took a quick drive up to Boston to spend a few days shopping. Our mission, to hit up the best shoe stores in and around Boston. Our first stop was in Cambridge to The Tannery. We arrived at the "old" store located at 11 Brattle Street with its store front located just a few steps down and underneath another retail space. We walked down the stairs and into an eclectic mix of shoes from comfort dress to retro athletic and premium denim galore. This store is positioned as a lifestyle retail space offering trendy comfort and outdoor styles. We had actually been to the store before so we were familiar, but really looking forward to seeing the "new" store just a few doors down at 39 Brattle Street. We were headed there to meet the man whose vision is apparent in every aspect of its interior. MORE »
