7 BEST SUBSCRIPTION SERVICES:

For Gifts that Keep on Giving
by PETER LACERENZA

You didn’t think that the internet could make shopping any easier, did you? As the web is flooded with countless pop-ups and start-ups, it’s hard to tell when the next best thing will come along change how you shop entirely. While not a web-based innovation, the subscription model has certainly flourished in cyberspace, and with perfectly good reason: you can find just about anything, and have it sent to your door every month. In that sense, shopping is getting even easier by the day.

While sites like Bombfell and ShoeMint have certainly carved a name for themselves in the fashion and footwear world, what about the odds and ends: the food, the wine, the dog treats and skin creams, not to mention the unmentionables?

Fortunately, we’ve come up with a list of some of the top e-shops for goodies of all kind. From tried and true Murray’s Cheese, to woof-worthy items from Bark Box, you won’t even need to lift a finger, except to scroll, that is.

Wine Awesomeness

Wine Awesomeness

As if wine could get any more awesome—as a jaded 20-year-old, I have only imagined the delights of forbidden nectar—we now have Wine Awesomeness. Started in Charleston, SC in 2012, Wine Awesomeness offers the coolest artisanal small production wines from around the world, and pairs them with the ideal music, food, and occasion pairing recommendations to enjoy alongside them. Though the company has a clear penchant for vino, its mission goes beyond bacchanalia. Instead, it aims to redefine how our current and future generations perceive and experience wine, and to support and share wine that emphasizes both balance and finesse in the process. Not only that, but through outlets like Champagne (v.)-for a cause, Wine Awesomeness is determined to rethink capitalism to benefit the wine world and the real world, and has joined forces with brands like VitaCoco for causes like malaria prevention in Africa.

The Fine Print:

In addition to the relationships and memories forged around a great bottle, Wine Awesomeness offers several monthly subscriptions to wet your whistle. A 6 Pack Mix offers mix of red, white, rose, and sparkling wines for $75/month, and Monthly Awesomeness offers 3 bottles of white, red, or mixed trios for $40/month.

Though not part of a monthly subscription, Wine Awesomeness also offers three bottle bundles of champagne (with price points ranging from $49.99-199.99) directly from its online store, perfect for getting the party started.

If you find a particular bottle you love one month and want another dose, you can also contact customer service to add it to your next month’s shipment. Customers can replace or refund unused product not to their liking for up to 60 days from date of purchase.

Wine Awesomeness is also commitment fee. Members can skip or cancel a shipment at any time. Credit cards used to sign up for membership will be charged $40 on the first day of each month while the member remains active, and members have up to the last day of each month to cancel or skip an upcoming month’s shipment by contacting customer service.

BlushBox

BlushBox

If you’re looking to add a little fashionable spice to your life, BlushBox is just the thing for you. Designed to make even the most sensuous of us, well, blush, boxes includes an array of stylish, sexy finds in their quarterly boxes: lingerie from Hanky Panky, vibrating bath mitts from Booty Parlor, and the rather curious Sexerciser (doesn’t leave much to the imagination, now does it?) to name a few. To ensure top quality, all selections are handpicked and curated by the BlushBox team. And the best part? The boxes arrive in discreet packaging, making this a perfect gift to deliver to your bestie at her place of work.

The Fine Print:

BlushBox sends out boxes on a quarterly basis, with full-sized boxes priced at $99. If this price is a little steep, you can get a bedroom boost with a mini box priced at $49.99 per quarter.  If subscriptions aren’t your thing, individually-priced themed boxes can be purchased at any time from the online catalogue, though keep in mind that boxes are subject to change, with new boxes being added from time to time to ensure the most up-to-date looks.

Your subscription will automatically renew from quarter to quarter unless it is cancelled. You will be sent email reminders, but don’t wait until the last second: BlushBox will not refund boxes that have already shipped. Boxes ship on the 15th of January, April, July and October, but the most recent quarter’s box will be shipped right away to ensure that you’re on trend.

Birchbox

Birchbox

Started in New York in 2010, BirchBox has made itself the go-to discovery e-commerce platform, and has since expanded with the addition of Birchbox Man in April 2012, and the acquisition of Paris-based JolieBox in September of that same year. Already, the company has begun to redefine the retail process by offering consumers a stress-free and personalized way to discover top beauty, grooming, and lifestyle products from emerging and established brands. To help you make the most of the products, original content like Birchbox Magazine and The Guide—in addition to other articles, interviews, and videos—will also give you helpful tips for improving your daily routine. Subscriptions are offered on a first come, first served basis, and you will be notified as soon as your subscription is ready. To guarantee that the samples are tailored to your liking, you will be asked to fill out a profile upon claiming your subscription.

The Fine Print:

Men’s subscriptions cost $20/month with an estimated subscription wait of two weeks, whereas women’s subscriptions cost $10/month with an estimated four week wait. When you place your order for monthly membership, you will be billed immediately for your first BirchBox: women will be billed on the 1st of each month after the initial shipment, and men on the 15th. And did we mention free shipping in 5-10 business days?

Unfortunately, BirchBox does not provide subscribers with the option to hold subscriptions. If you would like to skip a month, you can cancel your monthly subscription at any time, and simply replace your order when you are ready to receive boxes again. However, cancellation requests must be sent before 12 AM EST on the day before rebilling, lest you be billed for that month’s box. If you are a yearly subscriber, you will only be able to cancel during the first month of the subscription.

If you would like to stock up on your newfound favorite products, the online store is stocked with wares from over 300 companies and niche brands like Origins, ModCloth, French Bull and Kusmi Tea.

makers

For the Makers

For the DIY diva inside all of us, For the Makers is perhaps the easiest and most stylish way to craft. Instead of bouncing around from store to store in search of the perfect wares, For the Maker will simply send you craft kits with fashion-forward projects and easy tutorials to help you along the way. After consulting with brands like Kate Spade, Anthropologie, and Marc Jacobs, the ladies behind For the Maker can ensure that you will live beautifully and creatively with exclusive, hand-selected crafting materials from around the world.

The Fine Print:

For $29/month, subscribers will receive materials for a total of four thematic projects each month. Among the current craft bundles is the Hudson Collection, which includes the Yates metallic linen sachets, the crystal Saranac necklace, the Czech glass and dip-dyed indigo silk Hastings Bracelet, and the tie-dye Rye Market Tote. Fortunately, you are able to cancel your For the Makers subscription at any time, but you must cancel by the fourth to avoid receiving that month’s shipment. Customers will be billed immediately for the first shipment, which cannot be canceled or refunded.

Murrays

Murray’s Cheese

If you are a spendthrift monger, you can really do no wrong with a subscription to Murray’s Cheese. The famed Greenwich Village mecca for all things fromage offers one of the tastiest subscriptions on the web: perfect for fondue, or shameless date nights with a block of smoked Gouda.

The Fine Print:

Like I said, a subscription at Murray’s will set you back a pretty penny. There are three subscription options: Cheese of the Month, which offers a total 1.5 pounds of three limited production cheeses, Pair of the Month, which offers half a pound of one of the store’s favorite cheeses along with a tasty accompaniment, or Meat of the Month, which offers two varieties of cooked and cured, whole and encased meats or pates that all arrive on the third Thursday of the month. While you’re busy spending all that cheddar—prices start at $200 for a three month Pair of the Month subscription—you might want to set some money aside for a gym membership. As the saying goes, a moment on the lips…

Harry&David

Harry & David’s Fruit of the Month Club

The Fruit of the Month Club is a subscription of nearly mythic proportions. Though it has expanded to offer Light Size, Medley, Organic and Presidential for three month increments up to a year, you still can’t go wrong with the Signature Classic Club. Including Royal Riviera Pears, Oregold Peaches, Honey Mangoes and Cherry-Oh! Cherries, this deal is totally sweet, and healthy too!

The Fine Print:

Though the fruit for each month is already pre-selected—you can browse it on the store’s website—you will receive an average of four pounds of fruit every month for the Signature Club. Please note that, given the somewhat unpredictable harvests, there is no pre-determined ship date. Pricing for the Signature Club starts at $89.95, and while it is a bit steep, this is truthfully some of the best on the market, and is even backed by The Strongest Guaruntee in the Business.
