Last night marked the last night of a long week of shoe scouting at the New York Shoe Expo hosted by FFANY (Fashion Footwear Association of New York), and we can’t act like we’re not a little happy to be relieved from an exhausting schedule. Not that we don’t love galavanting around Manhattan checking out shoe collections set to hit the stores next year, but we’re over juggling heavy bags of sample clothes and umbrellas as the skies opened up on us downtown. And needless to say, wedges aren’t always the best choice of footwear when you’re going to be walking 18 blocks.
We finally had the opportunity to wind down from the madness at a party to celebrate the end of a busy week at H.H. Brown Shoe Company‘s showroom right in the heart of Times Square. Joining us as we kicked back was Rachelle Bergstein, our RWH contributor and author of one of our favorite books, Women From the Ankle Down. Rachelle hosted a book signing for the party attendees and spent the time exchanging smiles and conversation with fans. Before the night, all 150 copies of the book had gone.
Copies of her book are now available online and at book stores across the country, so if you’re looking for a fun, stress-free read, I suggest you check it out. I took the book with me on vacation and thanks to a few perfect beach days, I easily and enjoyably knocked it out. What’s so cool about the book is that it’s sprinkled with fun facts about the history of shoes—which is something every single one of us can relate to as shoe wearers.
The book takes you on a journey starting with the beginning of luxury handmade shoe making and ending with modern day fascination with shoes of all kinds. Picture one of the biggest names in footwear, Salvatore Ferragamo, as a young boy building his sisters a few pairs of white communion shoes the night before their ceremony and saving his mom from panic, and then somehow weave in Marilyn Monroe, the Jane Fonda exercise video that jump-started Reebok, and more instances of pop culture evolving from the ankle down.
The New York Journal of Books wrote of the book, “Every woman who loves her shoes should read this book – hell – every man who loves women’s shoes should read this book….Informative, interesting, and just plain fun.” We couldn’t agree more.
Because we’re still in party mode, we want to continue the celebration of summer by offering our readers a chance to win a signed copy of Women From the Ankle Down. All you have to do is tweet at us (@RunWithHeels) by August 10th with the hashtag #RWHSUMMER and you’ll be entered to win.
