TALKING SHOES with Frisk Jewelry

The talented mother daughter design team behind Frisk Jewelry tells us what sparked the start of their design career and where they derive their inspiration for capturing truly unique vintage style.
Tell us how your love for vintage pieces began. My daughters and I have always loved unique items, those things that catch your eye and you can’t take your mind off of them—particularly jewelry! A lot of that comes from growing up outside of New York, where my mom and aunts always had a great appreciation for eclectic jewelry and a stunning collection. During the 1930s, they would travel the world and collect pieces, which my daughters admired on our frequent trips to the East coast. My mom’s and aunts’ interest in jewelry became a passion of ours as well. Vintage jewelry is well made, uniquely beautiful and there is always a thoughtful intention behind each piece.
Where do you typically pull inspiration for your seasonal collections? Inspiration is everywhere. We find it in travel, experiences, family, movies, songs and eras. We are also inspired by Hollywood glamour, chic Bohemian style and the types of things we would want to wear.
What have been your favorite materials to experiment with? Because we adore vintage so much, we are constantly excited by different materials. Every piece we work with is special and has a history. It’s particularly fun to take something, like a prim and proper rhinestone necklace, and give it new life in a rock and roll piece, like our Marlene necklace which has additions of spikes and chains. With vintage materials you can reinvent and create the unexpected.
Who took the lead in designing your charming Boulder, CO boutique? The three of us designed the space. We wanted Frisk Accessories to feel like the jewelry line. Everything in the store is vintage – from the cases to the lighting fixtures. We all take part in merchandising. We like to create incredibly whimsical, eye catching displays which tell the story of the collections. As a family we have a similar design aesthetic, so we’ve agreed on every element, from wallpaper to signage
Describe which shoes you feel go best with your pieces. It doesn’t matter whether your shoes are 5 inch platform booties, or classic ballet flats. If your shoes make you feel glamorous, then they go perfectly with Frisk. It’s all about attitude!
