Easter Pastels Take Over Paris Fashion Week

The fashion elite have made their last stop of the season in Paris, with the shows wrapping up this past Wednesday. While I was sadly unable to attend this year (Carine Roitfeld and I ran into similar problems, except I wasn't blacklisted from Balenciaga, I just wasn't invited), I did keep tabs on the trends.  And apparently, Easter is alive and well in Fraaaance. Pastels, whites, and overall lighter palettes ran a-plenty on the runways –  in everything from dresses to minis to legwear.

Below are three ways designers cashed in on the pastel trend for fall.

Dresses.

Instead of all things dark and brooding, some designers opted to showcase frocks in lively, feminine colors. Balenciaga took a geometric approach with blocks of pastel greens and yellows, while Miu Miu and Sonia Rykiel went the girlier route, using lace and cascading ruffles. Rykiel's models also donned bright white tights throughout the show. (And really intimidating pom-pom headpieces.)

Skirts.

Mini skirts were omnipresent, but instead of the usual thigh-high black leather versions, we saw different shapes in a variety of pastels. Miu Miu showed how to amp up a faded lilac with a sharp black top and vibrant accoutrements. Equally as powerful were the tone-on-tone ensembles at Balenciaga and Cerutti.

Outerwear.

While there weren't too many robin's egg blue coats, many designers did venture away from standard black, experimenting with white, cream, and khaki. Celine proved how successful a hint of black could be in a calf-length winter white coat with stark accents at the collar and down the front placket. Chloe opted for a palette of beiges, with one of the standouts being a structured light putty coat. And of course, Valentino gave his spin on outerwear with a delicate khaki jacket adorned with ruffles and cutout flowers.

Although the easy, breezy colors looked pristine on the catwalks, let's just see if the trend can hold water in the streets. After all, the one upside of wearing black- it hides the city's winter grime.
