STYLE TRENDS: Demin style

Ralph Lauren

In these trickier financial times those ingenious fashion designers have come up with a win win scenario for dressing us frugally this spring/summer – it seems you can wear anything, as long as it's denim – yes, you heard me right, that good old workwear look is destined to have us all hooked faster than you can holler 'Oklahoma' at a hoe down.

Just when you thought you had the right take on which type of jeans you should be buying, and Lord knows that's been complicated enough

  • super skinny for an Audrey Hepburn 'I'm a classic yet creative' kind of a day,
  • boyfriend for a Reese Witherspoon 'I've just found these jeans that Jake left behind' kind of a day, or
  • shredded for a Gwen Stefani 'rock chick taking the kids to the play park' kind of a day -

Those damn designers have thrown another innovative idea into the mix to befuddle us all. The premise being that this fabric can be dressed up or dressed down, fashioned into a dress, a jacket, a skirt – it's just plain versatile – oh, and affordable.

It's not just the usual suspects like Ralph Lauren or G-Star who are rocking this look – although to be fair, both labels have pushed the envelope on this trend too this time around. It's everywhere you look… Derek Lam has a new take on a cute spring coat, Anna Sui's flower girl feel shakes up a mini dress that could easily work in the office, whilst Alexander Wangs quilted hot pants could see a girl through many a hot night out in the city.

The trick is to recognize that although you can move beyond just the jeans this season, one denim statement is enough.

Don't pair the jacket with the waistcoat with the pants. Opt for darker washes if you are slightly larger and beware the strategic shredding and badly bleached pieces – there's nothing worse than seeing someone attempting to work their denim look only to find that the garment is shredded to reveal too much tush, or bleached to enhance a body part that could do with covering up. If this trend takes you out of your comfort zone, choose an accessory – there are plenty of heels and bags out there that can allow you to look on trend without messing with your 'mojo'.

A cautionary note : I'm not a big fan of 'double denim' – that weird fad that some celebrities & runway models have been trying to pull off – yes Kanye & Rihanna you know you can, but I shudder to remember those shots of Justin & Britney back in the day, when in Hollywood, coordinating couples were considered chic…
