Sara Delaney - My name is Sara and I’m addicted to sequins…
I don’t know how this crept up on me, there I was, minding my own business getting on with being a Stylist and an early adopter of next summers trends – think sorbet pastels, sheer chiffon, amazing art prints and peek-a-boo cut outs – when quietly one day I found myself staring at sequins.
I can understand this fad hitting me full frontal closer to the festive season when I always seem to get sucked in to the sparkly vibe that inevitably hits the stores – but it's only just past Thanksgiving and I’m searching for sequin scores everywhere.
It's not only the cute J. Crew sparkle grey cardigan that’s caught my eye, it’s a sequin off the shoulder number from Ashish or a blazer from Tibi, all the way through to a beret from Urban Outfitters that I surely need as the winter chill approaches. It’s even spilled over to holiday shopping purchases – my poor unsuspecting nieces are in for a sequin fest from Abercrombie come the end of December.
So before I turn into Liza Minnelli on Broadway, let’s take a look at this trend and see what works and doesn’t.
I’m loving the mix of sequin on knitwear at Kenneth Cole where a little sparkle goes a long way. I can also see the allure of an all out glam glitter party dress from next season's Balmain – which Sienna Miller pulls off with aplomb, but let’s face it if it's me vs. Sienna in one of those dress off ‘who wore it best’ battles, Ms Miller would take the prize hands down.
So starlets aside, the secret to wearing this look well for us regular folk is to keep it minimal. The sequins themselves are shouting luxe; leave them to it – dress the look down with no accessories, neutral pumps and leave your handbag on someone else’s arm. Don’t mix the sweater with the skirt with the beret for fear of being scooped up on to the top of the Rockefeller tree for the duration of Santa season.
A piece at a time oozes savvy style. Try mixing up your textures – dress it down with denim for day and pair with silks and satins by night for a divine old Hollywood feel. If you can, trade up and buy higher end pieces to avoid the inevitable sequin loss sorrow that occurs with cheaper pieces. There’s nothing worse than working a 'wow' look only to find that at the end of the night you’ve left a trail of sequins behind you.
If this whole sparkly scenario scares the pants off you – try a taster; pick up a clutch or some arm warmers to add a little dazzle to your day, or throw a scarf with some shimmer nonchalantly round your neck and work your inner diva.

Very helpful. May have to rethink the New Year's Eve outfit. The sequined skirt, top and headband coupled with sparkly tights may be a tad over the top:)
