I can’t figure out whether the jeggings thing is pure jeanius (sorry I couldn’t resist), or a bizarre twist of fashion foolery that’s messing with my brain.  If you haven’t come across it yet it’s a cross between jeans and leggings. Some inspired soul came up with the term ‘jeggings’ and the rest of us are left holding our arms up to the heavens in irritation – why it couldn’t be ‘leans’ I don’t know.

It started as a quiet little fad last season when some brands starting punting out jean style pants in fabrics other than denim. I think I bought into the Seven boot leg pant in gray jersey from Scoop, only to find that the jersey material made my rear end sag like a diaper – there’s a reason denim jeans are so popular – the fabric is tough enough to hold vast amounts of corpulent fat in one place for long periods of time.

There’s a lot to be said for being fashion forward but sometimes its wiser just to let a trend slide by that has little chance of displaying our derrieres in good light.

So it’s time to investigate this new trend and separate the good, from the bad and the plain ugly.  Let’s start with the ugly because quite frankly they are making me feel quite nauseous…

This wouldn’t even cut the mustard on a rain soaked afternoon tucked up on your sofa watching re runs of the OC – they are plain car crash couture.

Equally scary is the Kate acid wash ($28.90 from asos.com). Think Daisy Duke before a magical Hollywood makeover.

I can see these as a weekend staple with a plaid shirt, a pair of biker boots and a boyfriend blazer for that “haven’t quite managed to think the whole outfit up but at least I got out of my pj’s” kind of moment.

Whilst the Quinn Crystal pocket denim jegging $99 at Bebe.com could easily see you through an evening out when paired with a cute silk blouse from Anthropologie and a wedge booty from Tod’s:

But all in all I’m loathe to back a trend that I can’t even abide the name of, so am going to screw my eyes shut, stick my fingers in my ears, hum quietly to myself and hope that Rachel Zoe doesn’t cotton on to this one and start parading her army of skinny celebs in these in front of the paparazzo.
