Sara Delaney - Fashion Advice for the Festive Season
So we’ve figured out there’s a glut of sparkles in the stores this season, which is all well and good until the sequin top you got for a steal at Loft is suddenly appearing (sometimes in an ugly way) on your neighbor at the bar.
The other sure sign that you’re fab find has now gone global, is when it’s advertised every half hour on the radio as the company’s best seller. Ok, so I know a good piece when I see one, but I don’t want to be wearing it alongside reams of other revelers.
So what else is available this season that has enough luxe appeal to take you effortlessly from office to evening or the school run to that special night out – the answer is – lots!
The great thing about the current trend for embellishment and everything shiny is that it gives us carte blanche to shake off the shackles of childhood when our parents told us to wear our posh pieces for Sunday best only. That satin dress or velvet trim top once confined to the ‘wear it to church’ closet can now be unleashed.
“Extravagance” I hear my mother cry, but actually if you mix it up with daywear you’re getting more use out of your wardrobe.
Before you throw caution to the wind and step out in the supermarket in last nights party frock – no word of a lie I’ve seen it – remind me to tell you about the time I was about to twitter about such a scene in my local Wholefoods, only to catch my texting thumb in time, I realized that the girl rocking the night to morning look complete with shopping cart was a stylist buddy of mine – clearly an early adopter of this look.
Let’s make sure we understand which fabrics work for you and how to wear them.
Silk or satin add glamour to any look and are great curve flatterers as well as being easy layering pieces. To make a simple satin statement, team a shirt with jeans or under a shift for that luxe daytime feel.
The more fluid the fabric you choose, the easier it glides over lumps and bumps. Couple this advantage with the current draping trend and it’s a win win choice for the fuller figure.
Velvet always adds a certain something to a look; its structured yet has soft lines and is great in jackets and coats. Newer versions of velvet are way cooler than when we were small – though Ralph Lauren may still be punting out dramatic full length evening skirts – there are contemporary velvet pieces for everyone.
Think structural shapes if you’re petite or an hourglass figure. Choose a more flowy fabric if you’re curvier. Try pairing a knee length velvet dress with opaque’s or leggings & boots for day or try a cinched velvet jacket in a festive color for night. Colors abound, so step away from your comfort zone and try the jewel tones.
Other fabrics that are fun are chiffons and brocades paired with cashmere and leather – think layering and mixing up the textures. If you’re working the chiffon look by day – remember less is more – look for a little chiffon on the sleeves or as an overlay.
