Sara Delaney - Bring out the bling for New Years Eve
Now I've always been a girl who loves a bit of bling, not just the Tiffany or Cartier kind (which I only seem to acquire if connected with some huge life changing event, like child production or years of marriage service), but the 'stop you in your tracks' kind that demands attention and makes passers by swoon at the site of it. So the current trend for statement jewelry is right up my street.
My magpie eyes seem to be attuned to scoping out the sparkliest, loudest, in your face pieces – if there's anyone to blame it would have to be Marilyn or Audrey back in the day, when, on soggy Saturday afternoons my buddies and I snuggled up on a sofa replaying 'Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend' or 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' with vast
amounts of ice cream and soda by our sides.
We've seen this trend bubbling along for a few seasons but this time around the look has blossomed to provide oodles of choice. You can fire up your inner diva with Lanvin or Marni inspired pieces that don't cost an arm and a leg from Banana Republic or 3.1 Phillip Lim.
More romantically inspired? Have a nose at the pearl/ribbon/beaded numbers that Bebe.com or Kate Spade have on offer.
Whether you favor the sculptural, goth or Park Avenue princess pieces, there's plenty around to get you inspired. But remember it's no good just adorning yourself with a bunch of baubles – don't go for the 3 foot long curtain tie back look if you're not a statuesque 6 feet tall – it will drown you. If you're more than a petite – think big, be brave and stay away from the dainty pieces.
Nothing to wear this New Years Eve? Grab a handful of bling from your accessory drawer and mix liberally with your dress of choice. There's no need to spend days hunting for a brand new frock for that big event – think 'statement piece' to amp up your party style. The great thing about the timing of this trend is that us Recessionistas can continue to be fashion fabulous by updating our trusty LBD's without breaking the bank.
