Sitting Down With Sam Edelman: RWH Chats with the Legendary Designer

When you think about designing legends, many names come to mind but one American designer surely stands out: Sam Edelman. We had a chance to cool our heels with the legendary designer and talk about all things fashion, design and, of course, shoes.
RWH: Tell us how you got interested in shoe design.
Sam Edelman: My father was in the leather business, so it was a natural step for me. I’m also fascinated by fashion and design and the shoe is an amazing canvas for expression. It has truly become my life.
RWH: In your years of experience in the shoe business, what continues to inspire you?
SE: My eyes are constantly open to aspects of design, style and art, film, theater, and music – inspiration can come from any of those places. I’m an avid traveler and the styles and cultures of women around the globe also serve as inspiration.
RWH: Who is the woman who wears Sam Edelman shoes?
SE: She is a fashion-forward and culturally aware girl who has a creative and individual sense of style. She’s daring with her wardrobe, mixing high and low as well as vintage with seasonal collections; she comes across as an effortless dresser.
RWH: What are the must-have shoes for any woman’s wardrobe?
SE: The beauty of shoes is that a girl doesn’t have to limit herself to one or two must-haves. This season, however, I’d say that a flat over-the-knee boot, a lace-up oxford, and a strappy-and-tough platform sandal top the list.
RWH: Tell us a little bit about your inspiration for your fall collection. What inspired you?
SE: This season, we played a lot with texture and detail. I’m a big equestrian, so themes of riding boots and the hunt were woven into the collection. Our more casual styles also had a bohemian influence, with distressed leathers and laser cut detailing.
RWH: What is the biggest mistake a woman can make when buying a pair of shoes?
SE: The biggest cause of shoe regret without a doubt is buying a style that doesn’t fit properly. I see it all the time when a woman wants a shoe: even if it isn’t available in her size, she’ll sometimes buy it anyway. A shoe that is too small or too big is never a good idea.
RWH: Where is the Sam Edelman collection going next season?
SE: For holiday, we have the Queenie, a metallic, lace-up, peep-toe platform sandal back in stock. We sold out of this shoe after it was featured in Harper’s Bazaar and now have a waiting list for it. I hate having to disappoint customers who want our shoes, so I’m thrilled to be able to offer it to everyone who has been so patient.
RWH: If you could give any advice to your fans – about life, buying shoes, whatever – what would it be?
SE: I’ve always felt most alive when I am creative; so, I guess that I would advise others to live a creative life!
