Winter’s just begun and we’re already ready for vacation.
We’ll probably be stuck enjoying one of 2008′s favorite buzzwords – a staycation - but that won’t stop us from dreaming of warmer, beach-ier places. No ma’am, especially not when we’re feasting our eyes on the collections of resort shoes that are dancing across the pages of magazines and our computer screens.
Have you seen them? There are vibrant colors that awaken the senses and bring to mind sun, surf and sweet drinks furnished with umbrellas; natural elements like cork, wood and even bamboo lend a feeling of being connected with Mother Nature at a time when we’re stuck indoors and the sun is scarce. Metallics and neutrals are the perfect complement to the rich colors and patterns found in the resort clothing collections, and the snake skin? That’s just sexy and fun.
Light & Bright: What would visions of tropical places be without brilliant, vivid colors? Just take a cue from Lily Pulitzer’s legendary resort patterns for the palette: hot pink, lime green, luminous yellow, and intense turquoise. Some designers like Christian Louboutin, Jimmy Choo, and Giuseppe Zanotti have even turned up the volume on these hues and taken them into neon territory.
Elemental Elements: Sunlight is a precious commodity and since Spring and Summer’s lush colors are deep asleep in hibernation, these organic elements are all that more meaningful. There’s nothing granola about the way these designers are celebrating a “green” connection, though. On the contrary, they’ve managed to deftly sculpt cork, bamboo, wood and even tortoiseshell into heels and wedges, and mega-platforms.

Goldilocks: Metallics like gold, bronze and pewter have been around for a couple of seasons which can be an eternity in the fashion world, so how are designers keeping them from being passe? If you’re Michael Kors you metallicize a gladiator sandal and put it onto a glamorous stiletto. At Sergio Rossi you’d mix suede with gleaming gold, and Tory Burch keeps it fresh by embellishing. At Jimmy Choo it’s turning snakeskin shades of silver.

Nudes: It’s surprising how refreshing neutral shades can be. Like a blank palette, their versatility and adaptability is inspiring. This resort season in footwear, neutrals are being given a softer and more artistic edge by being accented with natural elements like wooden heels and platforms or by being offered in rich suedes, soft leather, or satin. We especially love the muted grays which will be so dominant for Spring.

SSSSSexy Style: Snake skin is in and there’s something so exotic and glamorous about it. Styles sporting this edgy style are a natural choice for traveling to romantic, far-away locations (or even if you just want to feel like you are!). If you’ve got the cash, choose something sophisticated and drop-dead gorgeous like the python sandals from Sergio Rossi, or go for something completely wild like Nine West’s pink python wedges.

If you’re one of the lucky ones who’ll actually be jetting off to an island paradise, (or even if you’re just visiting your grandma in balmy Arizona), you’ve got every excuse to chase away Winter’s blues with a few of these styles. Not going anywhere? Well, dare to dream. And if you want to pick something up in anticipation of Spring, who can blame a girl for planning ahead???
