Shoes, Sex and the City
We know her as the woman who so adored Manolo Blahnik that she's credited with being single-handedly responsible for his shoes becoming a household name. We fell in love with her avant-garde, if not quirky, fashion sense and coveted her ability to drop the equivalent of a week's paycheck on the latest designer duds. We are, admit it, green with envy at the girl's shoe closet. Who else could it be but Carrie Bradshaw of Sex and the City?
With the much anticipated, much hyped, Sex and the City premiering today, I felt it was only fair to do a piece focused on the movie, (like every other blogger and their mother), but because this is Running With Heels, it's all about the shoes. Luckily this movie and the shoes have quite a relationship so there was no shortage of information available…which for me was both a blessing and a curse!
In fact the shoes, as well as New York City, have been called the ‘fifth character' of the movie. As far as I'm concerned they can both take credit for that part because really, as a former New Yorker myself, how can there be one without the other? But you definitely don't have to be from there or any city to understand Carrie's love for her shoes.
So let's get down to the goods, the reason you're reading this, what so many of us will be watching for…the shoes! The movie takes place over the course of a year so styles for every season are represented, including the requisite, very 'Carrie-esque' and unique styles. But before we go any further, there is one very special shoe to watch for, and that is the exclusive Manolo Blahnik pair made exclusively for Carrie and Sex and the City. Perhaps it was Manolo's way to give a priceless ‘Thank You' for what the series did for his name and shoes, but there's no question that this union was a match made in heaven. Hold on to your purses though ladies. These sapphire blue beauties won't be available until June 9th at the Manolo Blahnik store in Manhattan when and where you can buy them for the sweat-inducing sum of $885.
The other shoes to watch for? Take a look at the pictures all the way at the bottom of this post, (courtesy of the official Sex and the City site), but one of my favorite noteworthy styles is the Dior Extreme sandal (left). They have a starring role in the movie, making multiple appearances. Apparently their multi-season versatility is shown when Carrie wears them over argyle socks. (!!!!) Hey, she's nothing if at not daring with her fashion choices. The shoes are gorgeous, though, and she will reportedly wear them in both black and brown croc.
You can get your hands on the Siegerson Morrison boots seen here (right) which Carrie wears to NYC's Fashion Week. (I do not, however, know where to get the outfit she wears them with nor can I or would I recommend it with a clean conscience). If you'd like to assimilate some of Samantha's style into your wardrobe and you're a fan of Stuart Weitzman's shoes like she is, you can get a pair of his Fever pumps right now on Zappos that she reportedly wears in the movie.
All in all, expect to see a LOT of different brands of footwear in the uber-fashionable flick. Of course it will come as no surprise that Patricia Field was responsible for styling the wardrobe. When addressed about choosing the shoes for the movie, Patricia is quoted by InStyle as saying "And we decided she should be in a lot of labels, but the Manolo does have a big part." (Source) Well with all due respect, DUH! InStyle also reports that Pat Field put her own spin on a few things, like a black Dior pump that she wrapped mesh around. She's also quoted as saying "It's really about the piece, how it incorporates into the scene and with the character herself" when talking about choosing the brands for SJP to wear. (Source) If you're an avid watcher, you know that often the outfits Carrie is in reflect the character's mood, and of course the shoes are an integral part of that.
So even if the movie's plot and execution turn out to be only moderately good, and despite the fact that it hasn't seemed to blow critics away, I can't remember the last time I had an excuse to have so much fun planning a girls night out. Everyone will go for their own reasons, whether it's to escape into the world of these four women one last time or simply to admire the fashion show that the movie promises to be. Perhaps it's just a good excuse to leave the male significant other behind for a couple of hours. Whatever the reason, it's all about the fun, fashion, and friends, and what girl doesn't need that? Oh, and it will always serve as a reminder that it's ALL about the shoes.

Since I had major foot reconstrutive surgery 2 years ago, I can't wear anything higher than a 2" heel. I love when I find a fine shoe line with low heels. As for Carrie's shoes –oh, I can only dream!

I have searched the internet, every major department store (Saks, Neimans, Bergdorfs) in search of the purple shoes with feathers Jennifer Hudson held up while sorting through SJP's shoes closet. Who makes those shoes? Has any one found out yet? I've also checked the credit list on the SATC: The Movie DVD, nothing specific to those shoes. HELP. I must have those shoes.

Thank You so much for the post!I have been crazy about the no3 shoes ever since I started seeing the photos of the film shoot on the internet.But I haven't been able to find them ANYWHERE!I emailed every fashion magazine and shoe forum and always got the same reply – that these are the Brijuni Mary Jane available at Neiman Marcus, but they're not are they. Are they custom? Do You know the name of the style? I've found a similar style called Umit but it's not identical.ever since I saw these shoes I knew that this is the only pair of shoes I'll ever need
so please please please if You know where I could buy them please let me know!

Aria,which shoes have you hunted for,the purple ones Jennifer Hudson held up, or the sort of camel colored leather shoes shown above in photograph number 3? It isn't fair to display shoes in a movie that we crazy shoe gals can't located. I'm nuts to find the purple shoes form the movie.

Hi ladies! I'm trying my best to figure out where these mysterious shoes are coming from but unfortunately even with all my shoe-travels I've so far come up empty handed! The only recommendation I have at least for the purple ones is to visit Artyce designs (http://www.artycedesigns.com/). Candra, the founder and designer, may be able to recreate that shoe and I believe she specializes in gorgeous embellishments like feathers. Lots of luck to you and I'll let you all know if i come up with anything else!

It took months, but for those who are still searching the purple feathery sandals shown by Louise on the SATC movie are Manolo Blahnik's Watersnake and feather Dianamus sandal supposed to be available at Neiman Marcus.

Wow. I have not seen those purple shoes at my local Neiman's but I'll check again, and keep checking. Unfortunately for me, Manolos are cut narrow in the toe box for my foot. But those shoes are worth a little discomfort. Thanks for your hunting and successful efforts.

Thanks for your efforts as it helped me uncover the real designer of the purple shoes that Hudson held up in SATC. The shoes are a Roger Vivier design and are sold at the NYC store for a whopping $2,350. It's called a Folies sandal with diamant buckle. The photo shoes are hot pink, not purple. But at that price tag that is far to rich for me. But WOW. What shoes.

My best guess is that the pink pumps are Blahniks. But I looked on several department store sites and didn't see those exact shoes. But they do have that Blahnik look. They could be Blahniks, a style that is only sold at the New York store. It's like the Roger Vivier purple shoes from SATC: The Movie. It took me months to locate the designer, only to learn that the shoes are sold exclusively at the New York store, and that they are WAY above what even I am willing to pay for fabulous shoes ($2350).

I found the Manolo Watersnake and the father Dianamus sandals and they look nothing like the purple sandals Jennifer Hudson held in the SATC: The Movie. Manolo Watersnake shoes are snakeskins shoes, not satin shoes with feathers….unless you found something else? Did you check out http://www.blog.theshoegoddess.com and look down the list of shoes? The feather shoes are there in hot pink. Am I missing something?
