Counter: The stiff piece of material at the heel of the shoe that provides extra support and maintains the shape.

Heel: The solid, raised base or support attached to the sole of a shoe or boot under the back part of the foot. The heel includes the Top Piece at the bottom and the Heel Seat which touches the upper and holds the foot.

Insole: The layer of material laid inside the shoe that serves as a layer between the wearer’s foot and the sole of the shoe. It is often padded for comfort.

Outsole: The outer part of the sole that comes into contact with the ground.

Seat: Where the heel meets the shoe.

Sole: The entire lower part of the shoe including the insole, outsole, and heel.

Toebox: Section that contains the toes in the front of the shoe.

Top Piece: Located on the very bottom of the heel, this is the piece that makes contact with the ground and is made out of highly durable material.

Topline: The top edge of the Upper.

Upper: Consists of the entire top portion of the shoe which covers the foot including the vamp, toebox, and quarter.

Vamp: The portion of upper that covers the instep and toes all the way back to the quarter.
