A Beauty Guide for the Busy Mom!

Last week. Jennifer asked a wonderful question, one that I am asked more often than any other. What is an easy and fast make-up routine tailor made for the busy mom?

Let me start by telling you that finding the perfect make-up routine is not an easy feat for anyone. But when you combine it with the stress and responsibility of being a mom, even the easiest routine can seem like way too much effort. I am going to simplify it for you by taking out all of the guesswork.

First, brush a tinted moisturizer over your face. This will even out your skintone, hide the dark circles and give your face an over all smooth and pulled together look. My favorite tinted moisturizer is Skin Tint by Cover FX (www.sephora.com). In addition to sunscreen, it adds the perfect amount of bronzer and the slightest hint of shimmer to make the skin just glow. I also love Per-fekt skin perfecting gel (www.perfektbeauty.com). What it does to your skin makes it worth every penny.

The second step is bronzer. This is the pivotal ingredient to having the glow and radiance of healthy skin. With a fluffy brush add color to the high points of your face (all the areas the sun would touch), forehead, cheekbones, bridge of the nose and chin. Then, with a smaller brush, dust the bronzer over your eyelids. This will supply just enough color to add a pop to the eyes. Two of my favorite bronzers are by Three Custom Color Specialists (www.threecustom.com). They will give you the perfect kiss of color with no shimmer or sparkle.

The third step is lip and cheek stain. A dewy flush to the cheek will keep you looking healthy and sexy all day long. Buff it right into your cheek so it looks like the color is rolling up from underneath the skin. Using the same stain on your lips will give you the perfect kiss of color that will last all day long. Try Benetint by Benefit (www.benefitcosmetics.com).

Last but not least, mascara. This step will add depth to the eyes. By darkening, thickening and lengthening the lashes, you will accentuate and open the eyes. If you want extra length and depth, try Givenchy Phenomen’Eyes. This mascara will give you the sort of lashes even a drag queen would envy. Another favorite is DiorShow (Find both at www.sephora.com).

But if you just want to grab one from the drugstore I love the ones by L’Oreal. If your lashes are straight or point downward, a good curl would do you a lot of good; otherwise, curling is not a necessity. I know some of you ladies feel naked without a curled lash; if you are one of those don’t let me stop you.

Give this routine a try. The steps may seem simple but believe me; they do not compromise on the final outcome. I promise they will leave you looking (and feeling) beautiful. And, after a time or two, you will have this routine down to 3 minutes or less.

TIP: Apply the tinted moisturizer (or any other foundation product you use) with a foundation brush. This is very important for several reasons. First, your fingers will waste the product. Fingers are to make up, like cookies are to the cookie monster. Being dry and full of crevices, they will gobble every bit of it up, wasting product and money. Second, the application will be much smoother. Brushes lay the product where it is needed for a perfect even application. Choose a good synthetic brush and, with proper care, it will last you a lifetime.

Thank you RWH for the very warm welcome and thank you ladies for all of the fantastic questions. Week by week, I will get to every one of them. Do me a favor and keep your questions and comments coming…

Could you tell me how you apply mascara? I want the beautiful long lush lashes I see in magazines but I can never seem to make it happen on my own. Am I doing something wrong or Is it all done with retouching? Thanks. And, I LOVE your new column!!!!!

Just wondering . . . will that bronzing idea work even if you have very fair skin with pink cheeks? I've noticed it looks great on women with gorgeous medium to dark skin and often wondered if the product would flatter my skin tone. Love your column and the easy-to-follow instructions! Thanks!

After years of contact lenses everyday, I'm moving on. I bought some funky new specs and I'm suddenly realizing that I might need to rethink my eye makeup. Do you have any tips specifically for those of us wearing glasses?

Thanks so much and please keep up the great work!

Thanks so much for answering my question. I've already begun my new mommy make up routine and love how I feel pulled together and ready to face the day. I still haven't bought the bronzer–I'm ready to give it a try but I'm curious as to how you'll answer Anya as I am also pretty fair. I always thought bronzer (especially in the New England wintertime) would look phony?

hi, i love your column! i have very greasy skin and large pores, i try to keep up a good skin routine but i wonder if i am making my skin produce more oil by using products that are made for oily skin (and therefore stripping it of all its natural oils?) i cleanse and moisturise twice a day, and exfoliate twice a week. a couple of hours after applying my make up i am already so greasy! please help its driving me mad!
